ZMI Portec
Prior to our becoming Carmeuse Systems in 2024, our company went through several transitions over the years as we grew and expanded our offerings. This included the acquisition of ZMI Portec Inc. On this page, we’ll touch on our history with ZMI Portec and how we improved and integrated the well-respected line of lime slakers into our offerings.

Welcoming ZMI Portec to Our Family of Companies
Since 1975, ZMI Portec has been providing high-quality equipment solutions, including lime slakers, to clients across many different industries.
In November 2009, our company acquired the assets of the ZMI Portec Division of The Conveyor Company. Then, in January 2010, the parent company combined with wholly owned subsidiaries Stanco Projects Limited and ZMI Portec Inc., and transitioned to the name Semcan Inc. In the years since, our company ultimately rebranded to Carmeuse Systems.
Enhancements to the ZMI Portec Line of Detention Slakers
Overall, the ZMI Portec acquisition was pivotal, allowing us to integrate the renowned ZMI Portec line of lime-slaking equipment into our product suite. Over the years, we have continually enhanced the design and performance of our ZMI Portec Detention Lime Slakers, and today, the line remains a powerful and reliable lime slaking option for our customers.
Some of the enhancements made to the ZMI Portec line include:
- Wetting Bowl
The wetting bowl creates a water curtain around the dry feed system. The addition of a wetting bowl increases efficiency and saves money by preventing the build-up of lime at intake. This enhancement also improves safety by reducing dusting with less potential for upstream plugging. - Forced Draft Wet Scrubber
The forced draft wet scrubber captures dust and steam vented from the slaker by introducing a water curtain across the air stream. This enhancement increases safety by reducing undesired emissions and lowering the exhaust temperature from the slaker. The forced draft wet scrubber also saves money on wasted lime by returning lime dust particles to the slaking chamber. - Automation & Controls
The addition of a programmable logic controller (PLC) monitors inputs, outputs, and makes logic-based decisions to control the system’s water flow. This enhancement increases productivity and saves time and money by minimizing the manpower needed to monitor the system. - Additional Enhancements
