The Cost of Overlooking Your Lime System
Lime systems can be easy to overlook when they’re doing their job. But when they don’t get the attention they need, problems can build over time, often with warning signs along the way.
In a recent interview with The Northern Miner, Darren Farnworth, lime systems specialist at Carmeuse Systems, sat down with Devan Murugan to discuss what can happen when lime systems are overlooked and what operations should be paying attention to. He highlights warning signs such as frequent manual adjustments, increased lime consumption that doesn’t correspond with production, scale buildup, and repetitive unplanned maintenance.
Recognizing the warning signs is only part of it. Darren Farnworth also discusses the value of stepping back from the day-to-day, looking at what the system is telling you, and getting to the root of problems that keep coming back. For plants trying to get more from their existing operations, that broader perspective matters. The last thing you want is for an overlooked lime system to become a bottleneck that limits production.

Troubleshooting Grit in Lime Slaking
In lime slaking operations, high grit discharge is commonly misdiagnosed as an unavoidable byproduct of inert raw material impurities. However, excessive grit production frequently contains significant amounts of unreacted quicklime (CaO). Discarding reactive lime leads to lost reagent value, higher overall consumption, increased disposal fees, and inconsistent downstream process performance.
