Standard Chemical Feed Systems
Standard Systems
In addition to our customized chemical feed solutions, Carmeuse Systems has developed several standard chemical feed systems for the more common requirements typical of water treatment applications. These chemical feed systems are particularly focused on either quicklime slaking or hydrated lime mixing, but can easily be adapted to suit other chemicals like soda ash or magnesium oxide.

Features & Capabilities
Each of our systems are designed to balance the need to minimize footprint and ease installation with the requirement for comfortable access for operation and maintenance. Our Engineers have based their designs on the thousands of systems we have designed, supplied, and commissioned. When combined with feedback
from our Aftermarket group and the operations and maintenance staff they work with every day, the resulting system is both easy to install and easy to operate and maintain.
Dry chemical stored in silos needs to be cared for properly. Depending on the chemical this could include simply keeping water out, but in most cases, this also includes some sort of flow promotion equipment. Our experience allows us to select the correct combination of activation and aeration to best keep chemical flowing, based on the product and operating conditions.
Our standard systems use a volumetric feeder to meter chemicals into the downstream slaker or tank. For most water treatment applications this is more than accurate enough. However, if your process requires pinpoint accuracy we can upgrade to a gravimetric feeder.
Our standard quicklime feed system in a box includes our ZMI Portec Detention Slaker with Wetting Bowl . The ZMI Portec Detention Slaker from Carmeuse Systems slakes quicklime (particle size up to ¾”) and produces slurry with up to 30% solids. Our detention slaker produces a highly reactive lime slurry to meet your application needs and maximizes your lime usage.
Dry chemicals and water are combined in a tank to make up and store slurry or solution at the desired concentration. Typical operations have the make down process take place in the top ¼ of the tank. The automated controls allow this to take place as the chemical is being consumed, eliminating the need for separate storage and batch tanks.
The slurry tanks are equipped with industrial mixers specifically designed to combine dry material with water, and quickly mix to a homogeneous slurry or solution. Our systems use top entry mixers with appropriate baffles on the tanks to ensure the chemical stays in suspension.
Depending on the configuration, chemical, and chemical feed rate our standard systems use either centrifugal slurry pumps or peristaltic hose pumps to transfer slurry or solution to the appropriate injection point in the customer’s process.
All our chemical feed systems come pre-assembled to the maximum extent practical, with all the platforms and ladders necessary to access, operate and maintain the individual pieces of equipment. This requires minimal installation work enabling installation in a matter of days.
Included with the dry chemical feed system is a full PLC panel with color HMI, and all the starters necessary to run the equipment. We also include all the other necessities, like ventilation, heating, lighting, etc. fully wired and ready to go.
Shipping varies based on the type of standard chemical feed system:
- Standard Quicklime Feed System in a Box - The two modular boxes are shipped pre-insulated and upright. The upper storage silo module is shipped separately for simple connection at the site.
- Standard Hydrated Lime and Soda Ash Feed System in a Box - The pre-insulated modular box is shipped upright on a skid and fits on a conventional truck minimizing shipping costs. The upper storage silo module is shipped separately for simple connection at site.
- Standard Hydrated Lime and Soda Ash Feed System in a Can - The modular tube is shipped upright on a skid and fits on a conventional truck minimizing shipping costs. The upper storage silo module is shipped separately for simple connection at site.
We understand that being able to get the right aftermarket parts and components when you need them is critical to keeping your standard chemical feed systems up and running. Whatever your needs may be from an aftermarket parts standpoint, Carmeuse Systems has the experience, personnel, and inventory to provide a solution that is tailored to your specific application and requirements.
FAQs
A chemical feed system is a package of equipment designed to meter chemicals into a process. In Carmeuse Systems' case, most of these systems combine a dry chemical with water to form a slurry or solution.
A chemical dosing system is the portion of a chemical feed package that is focused on metering the correct amount of dry chemical into the process. This is usually done by way of a control valve on a recirculation loop or by using a VFD on a positive displacement pump.
The term chemical feed skid can mean many things. In our case, Carmeuse Systems attempts to put as much of the equipment needed to feed chemicals into a process on a skid (or in a pre-manufactured building) to allow as much shop assembly, wiring and testing prior to shipment.
- Sizing a chemical feed pump is straightforward. You chose a pump with a maximum capacity slightly greater than the maximum anticipated dosing rate. While there usually is a need to factor in safety, it is important not to impose this on the selection criteria before reviewing the pump options available as this may result in a pump that is significantly larger than necessary.
- Choosing a chemical feed pump for a system with a recirculation loop on the other hand is a much more complicated process.
Carmeuse Systems Chemical Feed System Features & Capabilities
Our standard chemical feed systems are designed as either a compact “slaker-in-a-box” system or a “system-in-a-can”. These modular chemical feed systems provide integrated solutions for receiving, storing, feeding, slaking (if quicklime application) and delivering quicklime, hydrated lime, soda ash, and magnesium oxide from a truck through to pumping of slurry or solution off to a chemical injection or chemical metering point. Standard packages are available for feed rates up to 2500 lb/hr (1133kg/hr).
These chemical feed systems limit the amount of onsite work required, reducing the construction time needed once the system arrives onsite. Carmeuse Systems assembles, installs, pipes, wires, and integrates all components/equipment through an automated control panel at our facility prior to shipment.
Typical Applications
We have the experience designing standard chemical feed systems for a variety of applications across different industries which includes, but is not limited to:
- Water Treatment
- Chemical Processing Mining
- Oil and Gas
- Pulp & Paper/Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC)
