Lime Slakers
Detention Slaker
Detention slakers are used to produce lime slurry for a variety of industrial applications including water treatment, flue gas treatment, and chemical manufacturing. In a detention slaker, quicklime (calcium oxide) is combined with water and thoroughly agitated to create a highly reactive hydrated lime slurry (calcium hydroxide). Unlike in batch processes, detention slakers can produce a continuous supply of lime slurry for use in downstream processes.
When operating a detention lime slaker, research has shown that for any given quicklime source, lime slaking temperature control is the single most important factor influencing the reactivity of the final lime slurry. The chemical reaction of quicklime and water is exothermic, producing a significant amount of heat. While this heat accelerates the reaction and helps make the slaking process faster and more efficient, proper temperature control is crucial to prevent overheating. By monitoring the temperature of the slurry and automatically adjusting quicklime and water inputs to maintain an optimum slaking temperature between 175°F and 185°F (79.4°C and 85.0°C), detention slakers are able to better adapt to fluctuations in lime reactivity and produce a more consistent, higher-quality lime slurry.
Compared to other lime slaker types, detention slakers are moderately sized, relatively inexpensive to install, and have a high ability to be optimized. They are well-suited to applications where lime quality is reliable, and a continuous flow of lime slurry is needed.
Why Use the ZMI Portec Lime Slaker from Carmeuse Systems?
Versatile
The ZMI Portec Detention Slaker from Carmeuse Systems can slake quicklime, as pebble or fine lime, up to ¾” and handles water with moderate impurity levels without issues. ZMI Portec lime slaking systems can produce lime slurry in and around 25% solids.
Safe
Our ZMI Portec Detention Slaker is outfitted with a horizontal agitator to break the slurry surface as it mixes. While this helps to ensure complete mixing of the water and quicklime, it also allows for safer operation by minimizing hot spots and preventing the formation of a dangerous lime cap along the surface of the lime slurry. Additional enhancements like our wetting bowl and forced draft wet scrubber further increase safety by reducing dusting in the shop.
Efficient
Overall, the ZMI Portec line of detention slakers helps to optimize lime usage. Vigorous agitation of the slaking chamber ensures no dead spots during lime slaking, and our detention slakers feature an external water jacket, which preheats incoming water, reducing the need for separate pre-heaters.
Automated
By implementing our programmable logic controlled (PLC) system, our ZMI Portec Detention Slakers can respond to changes in lime quality and feed rate via integrated automated controls. This minimizes the manpower needed to monitor the system and increases productivity by automatically monitoring input and outputs and adjusting accordingly.
